Durga Pujo is not just an autumn festival in Bengal.
It is much much more than that.
It signifies the victory of good over evil, the transition from darkness to light. Today Durga Pujo is a world heritage!
I wait so eagerly for the whole year, planning and preparing.
And then finally the mesmerising enchantments of Mohaloya starts off the festivities.
From Panchami to Dashami, it is all about the rich and vibrant rituals like – Chokkhu Daan, Pran Protisthaan, Anjali & Aarati everyday, Sondhi Pujo, Dodhikorma, Dhunuchi Naach and many more…
All of it with the magical beats of Dhaak and Kasor. That is the soul music of the festival.
Pujo means new dresses every day, fun with friends.
Pujo means, pandal hopping, dance and cultural performances, delicious traditional food and no time limits for going to bed.
Usually I keep my best dress for Ashatami.
Dashami is the end of the festivities with Boron, Sindur Khela, Bisorjon and the 2 rosogollas with Shubho Bijoya pronam at the empty pandal.
As much as I feel sad, I start getting ready for the next year, with “Asche Bochor Abar Hobey…”
Durga Pujo is just not an autumn festival.
It is an essential part of being Bengali.

Poems – Sashmit Roy

Birds and a Beggar

It stretches its wings,
Moves it, counter-swing-
The Bird, flutters momentarily in vain,
And then tries, and tries, and tries again;
He falls sometimes, injures himself a few-
But with the courage it is inborn,
The heaven, with his first flight, is adorned.

I dawdle hungry on this way,
Grimy and dusty rags wrap me at bay;
Tonight, with an old mind I ponder-
What thus, has led me to this poor honour?

A young man, bles’t by Fortune I was-
Trade of condiment, cloth and colours;
Conceited with greed my nature had become,
Indolent and ignorant my life-form succumbed.

Friends, foes- all alike,
Alcohol and addictions fed-
I, prodigious, was too fooled,
I was surrounded with a poisonous brood.

In a few years consequently,
I was reduced to a destitute person’s take;
Gambled my wealth and life, to a penny-square,
And like a fool and money, we both bid fair.

For fifty years I’ve begged on a commoner’s foot,
And gained no less than vast ignominy put;
I’m worn now, for my fatigued feet falter,
Like a bird on its dying alter.

I look up at the golden, autumn sun,
Cool breeze, with which black birds return,
Their flight so graceful, like men who did mine coal in their prime-
And at the end of the day, free birds soar high,
While beggar men such me, to the ground are tied.

As this life ends,
A realisation upon me dawns,
I ask myself, “Was it very costly, to learn to open my wings?”
The answer puts me to shame.

Today my voice calls,
“Perseverance doth bring golden times,”
A lesson well understood-
“Do flap your wings, while the going is good.”

The Chess Of Life

Two kings preside, for a game of chess,
The board black and white- like that the world’s mess;
Opulent majesties, feeding on poor men’s grief,
Sitting serene, as a calm game begins.

A pawn opens the board,
Like famine’s first victim strode;
Anon enough there is death,
And the life of inequalities set.

The dynamic rulers remiss, the pieces of wood and love- Proclaim their endearments for subjects,
And The One above.
Nevertheless, actions speak louder than words,
Monarchs’ voracious deeds outdo tis’ holy words.
And as a knight is butchered at a king’s stake,
One piece of life is removed from the game.

Nature has it’s rules; and chess’ two Queens duel,
Vigorous and vibrant battle,
As their swords and courage rattle.
Alas the strongest pieces- Are endmost left on board.
Along with, ‘Sire Majesty’- Zest of ultimate power adorned.

At the end of times, on a colourless land,
We are left with a few pieces at hand.
If one were to ask, “Would thee accept a draw? End this strife of mighty dishonour!”
Thee would retreat from the offer, as greed-overdosers-
The war would go on heat, until a king falls at feet.

The moral of this spiel is told time and again,
Withdraw from violence! Withdraw from gluttony! God that you call him,
Also had but one message.

Come, let us change-
For a journey of thousand miles begins with a single step.

Global Trotting

I should like to globe trot to places,
Reaching beyond space;
Where below lies another sky,
On anchored islands folded sunsets spry;
Watched by doves and goats,
Lovely cruises building boats,
Lay in the shore unlike hulls of capsized ships,
Who mortify in their underwater dips;
Where there is a breath of life,
To where there is a lot to tuck with a knife;
Travelling NEWS,
All I need is my travelogue as the cues;
From where the peak looks like a dot,
Upon reaching no one can spot;
Where the Great Wall round China goes,
To places that freeze my toes;
Where forests are as hot as fire,
Wide as England, tall as a spire;
Full of apes and different nuts,
Not forgetting the negro hunter huts;
And zoomed past the tiniest green hummingbird,
In front of an ornithologist studying like a nerd!
Where kindly falls the night,
All the stars spark to light;
Continents, countries, cities are like branches of a tree,
The choice is never wide and never free;
But yet I’ll go there one day,
For the memories I make will be way too disarray…

The Notebook

From the fibres of wood, I arise
My Pages are made,
colourfully printed, coated with glaze
Sheets then bundled and bound
with thread woven around
Given a cover then packed off,
To a shop where I was picked off
A shelf by a pair of tiny hands,
They held me tight, and I knew
That I was with the right person, who
Would use me for the best
And that I was possessed
For a good cause.
In the end,
I am a notebook
And oh! Just look
At the wonders I can create.

Homecoming – Shuvroneil Mazumder

‘Home’ is just a four-letter word, but it has many meanings for those around.For most it’s a place, for some a person, for few it’s their occupation and for others it’s their passion. Overall, it’s a distinct feeling of comfort that arises from a sense of belongingness.

I was raised in a Bengali household and growing up, the days of Durga Pujo were an inseparable part of our lives, a tradition that even our global counterparts refuse to part with. Months before the Goddess (or Maa as most know her) announces her arrival, the city diligently starts preparing, getting all decked up and ensuring nothing goes amiss in celebrating Maa’s welcome. Legend has it that these are the days she comes back home to her abode on Earth. Accompanied by her children, she spends 10 days here before heading back to her Godly abode atop the Himalayas. And these are the 10 days we celebrate her homecoming. Over the years this celebration has evolved into grandiose spectacles, oftentimes getting accused of compromising tradition for grandeur. But was anyone ever successful in stopping a passionate Bengali?History bears witness! And this was the passion for grandeur, tradition, and culture all coming together to create something so immeasurable, it is only to be experienced.

Years have passed, celebrations have taken a different form, Pujo holds a unique definition for everyone. In spite of clear blue October skies with clouds in the shape of cotton candy, or the incomparable feeling of watching kaash ful swaying in the cool autumn breeze, Pujo for me, always stood for one thing – homecoming. It is a time when we celebrate homecoming, starting right from Maa’s arrival. Bengalis who are away from their families, come home. The city greets not just the Mother, but the arrival of so many of her children who are spread across the country, even across the globe. Students, professionals, people like you and me go home. Time stops for this period of togetherness. Fuelled by their festive spirit, night and day holds the same meaning as families, friends, couples, etc flock to the streets for this carnival of joy within the City of Joy. Globally Maa finds many homes in numerous nations like the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada and the USA. Truly a global citizen! The Bengalis residing here also come back home… to the roots of their culture. The setting may be different but what remains unchanged is their spirit and the centuries old tradition of celebrating Maa’s homecoming.

But this Pujo, there’s no homecoming for me. No friends, no get-togethers, no night-outs, no pandal hopping (something I stopped that long back), no fancy dinners, no midnight bar conversations, no crowded streets, no metros packed with people, no crowded public transport. Consumed by this so-called machinery known as adult-life, there’s no Pujo for me, only devotion for work. My time is spent before a laptop screen, churning my brain for words to give shape to my thoughts to earn a livelihood. To be fair, I’ve never really considered going home until now as we enter into the final countdown. But it always holds a special place in my heart and it forever will. And that’s when I feel content with my current predicament. There’s no homecoming for me, because it was forever within my heart. No wonder… home is where the heart is and this feeling of coming back home is unbeatable.
